原句: There is some arbitrary assignment of colors to represent different elements and gases.

意思:
a. not seeming to be based on a reason, system or plan and sometimes seeming unfair
b. using power without restriction and without considering other people

字源: late Middle English (in the sense ‘dependent on one's will or pleasure, discretionary’): from Latin arbitrarius, from arbiter ‘judge, supreme ruler’, perhaps influenced by French arbitraire.

字源: mid 17th cent. (in the sense ‘counterbalance’): from Latin compensat- ‘weighed against’, from the verb compensare, from com- ‘together’ + pensare (frequentative of pendere ‘weigh’).
