1. expenditure   noun [uncountable/countable]   

原句: They talk about capital expenditures and regularly budget for replacing furniture in offices and machines in factories.

意思:
a. the act of spending or using money; an amount of money spent
b. the use of energy, time, materials, etc

字源: mid 18th cent.: from expend, suggested by obsolete expenditor ‘officer in charge of expenditure’, from medieval Latin, from expenditus, irregular past participle of Latin expendere, from ex- ‘out’ + pendere ‘weigh, pay’. 

例句:
a. The budget provided for a total expenditure of £27 billion.
b. This study represents a major expenditure of time and effort.


2. intensity   noun   

原句: Life expectancies of home components depend on the quality of the appliance and its installation, as well as intensity of use.

意思:
a. the state or quality of being  intense
b. the strength of sth, for example light, that can be measured 

例句:
a. He was watching her with an intensity that was unnerving.
b. The sun beat down with fierce intensity.



3. appliance   noun
