1. equation   noun   

原句: They can all be described by the same equations.

意思: a statement showing that two amounts or values are equal, for example 2x + y = 54

字源: late Middle English: from Latin aequatio(n-), from aequare ‘make equal’, from aequus ‘even, level, equal’. 

例句: This can be shown by a simple equation.



2. graffiti   noun [uncountable]  
 

原句: Other marks look like contemporary graffiti.

意思: drawings or writing on a wall, etc. in a public place

字源: mid 19th cent.: from Italian (plural), from graffio ‘a scratch’. 

例句: The subway was covered in graffiti.



3. diagnose   verb   

原句: Or diagnose when the heart is no longer performing efficiently.

意思: to say exactly what an illness or the cause of a problem is

字源: mid 19th cent.: back-formation from diagnosis. 

例句: Her condition was wrongly diagnosed by the doctor.



4. propulsion   noun [uncountable]   

原句: People thought of jellyfish swimming as like jet propulsion.

意思: the force that drives sth forward

字源: early 17th cent. (in the sense ‘expulsion’): from medieval Latin propulsio(n-), from Latin propellere ‘drive before (oneself)’. 

例句: The fish uses its tail fins for propulsion through the water.



5. subtle   adjective   

原句: But it's a bit more subtle than that.

意思: not very noticeable or obvious

字源: Middle English (also in the sense ‘not easily understood’): from Old French sotil, from Latin subtilis. 

例句: There are subtle differences between the two versions.
