1. autonomous   adjective   

原句: Became an independent country October 10, autonomous from the dutch.

意思: able to govern itself or control its own affairs

字源: early 19th cent.: from Greek autonomos ‘having its own laws’ + -ous. 

例句: Teachers aim to help children become autonomous learners.



2. cliff   noun  
 

原句: The strip of desert in the middle of the ocean is studed with volcanic rock, limestone cliffs.

意思: a high area of rock with a very steep side, often at the edge of the sea or ocean

字源: Old English clif, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch klif.
