1. touristy   adjective   

原句: Even in the touristy part of town along the harbor where the cruise ships dock.

意思: attracting or designed to attract a lot of tourists 

例句: Jersey is the most touristy of the islands.



2. board up   phrase  
 

原句: A prettily painted house sits next to one that is boarded up.

意思: to cover a window, door, etc. with wooden boards 

例句: Most buildings along the street had been boarded up.



3. ashore   adverb   

原句: The bay where Spanish balleons once put ashore.

意思: towards, onto or on land, having come from an area of water such as the sea or a river 

例句: The cruise included several days ashore.



4. invader   noun   

原句: Where Curacao was defended from pirates and French and English invaders in the 17th and 18th centuries.

意思: an army or a country that enters another country by force in order to take control of it; a soldier fighting in such an army 

例句: They prepared to repel the invaders.



5. thwart   verb   

原句: A little land crab raises its claws as if to thwart this invasion by tourists.

意思: to prevent sb from doing what they want to do

字源: Middle English thwerte, from the adjective thwert ‘perverse, obstinate, adverse’, from Old Norse thvert, neuter of thverr ‘transverse’, from an Indo-European root shared by Latin torquere ‘to twist’. 

例句: They were thwarted in their attempt to gain overall control of the company.
