1. notwithstanding   adverb   

原句: All the above notwithstanding, is was only a matter of time before a country in the region was given the go-ahead to host the showpiece of world soccer.

意思: despite this

字源: late Middle English: from not + withstanding, present participle of withstand, on the pattern of Old French non obstant ‘not providing an obstacle to’. 

例句: Notwithstanding, the problem is a significant one.



2. showpiece   noun

意思: without considering sth or being influenced by it 

例句: Everyone is treated equally, irrespective of race.
