1. briefly   adverb   

原句: Middleton has also been, briefly, a working woman.

意思:
a. for a short time
b. in few words 

例句:
a. He had spoken to Emma only briefly.
b. Let me tell you briefly what happened.



2. close-knit   adjective   

原句: She comes from a close-knit family.

意思: having strong relationships with each other and taking a close, friendly interest in each other's activities and problems 

例句: It's the close-knit community of a small village.



3. peak   noun   

原句: The temperature peaks above 105 degrees in June and July when the tournament is hosted.

意思: the point when sb/sth is best, most successful, strongest, etc.

字源: mid 16th cent.: probably a back-formation from peaked, variant of dialect picked ‘pointed’. 

例句: Traffic reaches its peak between 8 and 9 in the morning.



4. tournament   noun   

原句: The temperature peaks above 105 degrees in June and July when the tournament is hosted.

意思: a sports competition involving a number of teams or players who take part in different games and must leave the competition if they lose. The competition continues until there is only the winner left

字源: Middle English (in sense 2): from Anglo-Norman French variants of Old French torneiement, from torneier ‘take part in a tourney’, based on Latin tornus ‘a turn’. 

例句: She retired from tournament golf last year.



5. infrastructure   noun  [countable/uncountable]   

原句: The country has less than 2 million inhabitants and lacks most of the infrastructure to host the tournament.

意思: the basic systems and services that are necessary for a country or an organization to run smoothly, for example buildings, transport and water and power supplies

字源: early 20th cent.: from French (see infra-, structure). 

例句: Completed infrastructure and supporting facilities will be available for each venue.
