1. quaint   adjective   

原句: Maddox may seem somewhat quaint.

意思: attractive in an unusual or old-fashioned way

字源: Middle English: from Old French cointe, from Latin cognitus ‘ascertained’, past participle of cognoscere. The original sense was ‘wise, clever’, also ‘ingenious, cunningly devised’, hence ‘out of the ordinary’ and the current sense (late 18th cent.). 

例句: The village looks rather quaint.



2. horse-drawn   adjective  
 

原句: Like an Amish farmer who drives a horse-drawn buggy.

意思: ( of a vehicle )  pulled by a horse or horses 

例句: Horse-drawn trams were introduced to the city in 1882.



3. proponent   noun   

原句: But proponents of a no-credit-card lifestyle say there's nothing old-fashioned about their choices.

意思: a person who supports an idea or course of action

字源: late 16th cent.: from Latin proponent- ‘putting forth’, from the verb proponere ‘set forth’, from pro- ‘forward’ + ponere ‘put’. 

例句: She is among the most outspoken proponents of the plan.



4. offload   verb   

原句: I've offloaded 10to 12 different credit cards that I no longer have to make a payment on.

意思: to get rid of sth/sb that you do not need or want by passing it/them to sb else 

例句: They should stop offloading waste from oil tankers into the sea.



5. broadly   adverb   

原句: Now that debit cards are broadly accepted.

意思: generally, without considering details 

例句: Broadly speaking , I agree with you.
