1. hurdle   noun   

原句: His research led him to conclude that the language barrier is but one hurdle between cultures.

意思: a problem or difficulty that must be solved or dealt with before you can achieve sth

字源: Old English hyrdel ‘temporary fence’, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch horde and German Hürde. 

例句: We'll cross that hurdle when we come to it.



2. condone   verb  
 

原句: The hands-on culture condones body contact as an acceptable form of communication.

意思: to accept behaviour that is morally wrong or to treat it as if it were not serious

字源: mid 19th cent.: from Latin condonare ‘refrain from punishing’, from con- ‘altogether’ + donare ‘give’. 

例句: The college cannot condone any behaviour that involves illicit drugs.



3. baffle   verb   

原句: Are baffled by the behavior of Americans and other Westerners.

意思: to confuse sb completely; to be too difficult or strange for sb to understand or explain

字源: late 16th cent. (in the sense ‘cheat, deceive’): perhaps related to French bafouer ‘ridicule’ or obsolete French beffer ‘mock, deceive’. 

例句: I'm baffled why she hasn't called.



4. intersection   noun   

原句: Min took an early interest in the rough-hewn intersection of language and culture.

意思: a place where two or more roads, lines, etc. meet or cross each other

字源: mid 16th cent.: from Latin intersectio(n-), from intersecare, from inter- ‘between’ + secare ‘to cut’. 

例句: Traffic lights have been placed at all major intersections.



5. timid   adjective   

原句: They were too timid to speak English.

意思: shy and nervous; not brave

字源: mid 16th cent.: from Latin timidus, from timere ‘to fear’. 

例句: He stopped in the doorway, too timid to go in.
