意思: to make sth that is wrong or unfair seem acceptable 

例句: The movie has been criticized for apparently legitimizing violence.



2. aspiration   noun [countable/uncountable]  
 

原句: As long as there are people out there with musical aspirations.

意思: a strong desire to have or do sth

字源: late Middle English (in sense 2): from Latin aspiratio(n-), from the verb aspirare, from ad- ‘to’ + spirare ‘breathe’. 

例句: I didn't realize you had political aspirations.



3. obsessive   adjective   

原句: Needham's obsessive hobby evolved into the Internet Movie Database.

意思: thinking too much about one particular person or thing, in a way that is not normal

例句: He's becoming more and more obsessive about punctuality.



4. sift through   phrase   

原句: The online resource that allows users to sift through information about 1.5 million movies and TV programs and 3.2 million cast and crew members.

意思: to examine a large collection of something, usually in order to discover something or to decide what is important

例句: They spent days carefully sifting through the evidence.



5. shell out   phrase   

原句: Those who shell out $15.95 per month get access to IMDbPro.

意思: to pay a lot of money for sth 

例句: The band shelled out $100 000 for a mobile recording studio.
