1. bilingual   adjective   

原句: In one study, scientists used a special machine to look at the brains of bilingual adults.

意思: able to speak two languages equally well

字源: mid 19th cent.: from Latin bilinguis, from bi- ‘having two’ + lingua ‘tongue’ + -al. 

例句: She is bilingual in English and Punjabi.


2. stutter   verb   

原句: Another problem is stuttering.

意思:
a. to have difficulty speaking because you cannot stop yourself from repeating the first sound of some words several times
b. to move or start with difficulty, making short sharp noises or movements

字源: late 16th cent. (as a verb): frequentative of dialect stut, of Germanic origin; related to German stossen ‘strike against’. 

例句:
a. I managed to stutter a reply.
b. The car stuttered along in first gear.



3. approximately   adverb   

原句: That would be approximately three thousand languages lost forever.

意思: used to show that sth is almost, but not completely, accurate or correct 

例句: The two buildings were approximately equal in size.



4. downright   adjective   

原句: Do you find it boring, exciting, or downright terrifying?

意思: used as a way of emphasizing sth negative or unpleasant 

例句: There was suspicion and even downright hatred between them.



5. bewildering   adjective   

原句: This is especially bewildering for older people.

意思: making you feel confused because there are too many things to choose from or because sth is difficult to understand 

例句: There is a  bewildering variety  of software available.
