1. smudge   verb   

原句: If they lift their hand from the paper, they can smudge the ink.

意思: to make a dirty mark on a surface

字源: late Middle English (as a verb in the sense ‘soil, stain’): of unknown origin. The noun dates from the late 18th cent. 

例句: The mirror was smudged with fingerprints.



2. vertically   adverb   

原句: Chinese and Japanese can also be written vertically from the right to the left.

意思: going straight up or down from a level surface or from top to bottom in a picture, etc. 

例句: The cliffs rose up vertically out of the water.



3. literate   adjective   

原句: More and more people around the world became literate.

意思: able to read and write

字源: late Middle English: from Latin litteratus, from littera ‘letter of the alphabet’, (plural) ‘epistle, literature, culture’. 

例句: Though nearly twenty he was barely literate.



4. in good company   idiom   

原句: You are in good company with a lot of other great people.

意思: if you say that sb is  in good company , you mean that they should not worry about a mistake, etc. because sb else, especially sb more important, has done the same thing

例句: If you worry about your relationship with your teenage son or daughter, you are in good company.



5. scheme   noun   

原句: Specialists and experts from many different fields are needed to work on these complex schemes.

意思: a plan or system for doing or organizing sth

字源: mid 16th cent. (denoting a figure of speech): from Latin schema, from Greek skhēma ‘form, figure’. An early sense was ‘diagram of the position of celestial objects’, giving rise to ‘diagram, outline’, which led to the current senses. The unfavourable sense “plot” arose in the mid 18th cent. 

例句: Under the new scheme only successful schools will be given extra funding.
