1. duration   noun [uncountable]   

原句: A complete three-dimensional image of the chest cavity can be produced during the duration of one held breath.

意思: the length of time that sth lasts or continues

字源: late Middle English: via Old French from medieval Latin duratio(n-), from durare ‘to last’, from durus ‘hard’. 

例句: The school was used as a hospital for the duration of the war.


2. prematurely   adverb   

原句: So conclusive that the study was terminated prematurely and letters were sent to all the perticipants advising them of the results.

意思: happening before the normal or expected time 

例句: Her hair became prematurely white.



3. conventional   adjective   

原句: The technology is much more sensitive than a conventional chest X-ray.

意思: following what is traditional or the way sth has been done for a long time

字源: late 15th cent. (in the sense ‘relating to a formal agreement or convention’): from French conventionnel or late Latin conventionalis, from Latin conventio(n-) ‘meeting, covenant’, from the verb convenire ‘assemble, agree, fit’, from con- ‘together’ + venire ‘come’. 

例句: You can use a microwave or cook it in a conventional oven.



4. radiation   noun [uncountable/countable]   

原句: But also uses much more radiation.

意思: powerful and very dangerous rays that are sent out from radioactive substances

字源: late Middle English (denoting the action of sending out rays of light): from Latin radiatio(n-), from radiare ‘emit rays’, from radius ‘ray, spoke’. 

例句: Nuclear testing has exposed millions of people to radiation.



5. enrol   verb   

原句: Participants in the study were enrolled at 33 sites nationwide in 2002 and 2003.

意思: to arrange for yourself or for sb else to officially join a course, school, etc

字源: late Middle English (formerly also as inroll): from Old French enroller, from en- ‘in’ + rolle ‘a roll’ (names being originally written on a roll of parchment). 

例句: You need to enrol before the end of August.
